Within the framework of the Big Music for Small Cities project, a workshop was organized under the direction of the world-famous pianist and conductor Ralf Gothóni together with the Joensuu City Orchestra. During the intensive training, Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 83 “La Poul”, was worked on. The workshop was organized apropos on the European Cooperation Day on 21 September 2021.

The workshop began early in the morning. Thus, musicians were required to have an immediate presence and empathy with a work that required precision. According to Gothóni, the work may look easy in a sheet music, but it is not. Music needs to be brought to life. Gothóni described the process as a shared adventure into the world of music, which requires a lot of enthusiasm and activity, will and joy to be together by the work.

After nearly two hours of workshop, Maestro was pleased with the outcome. The work was good and e.g. phrasing and timing were honed. The orchestra found dialogue and a dimension to the music.

The Joensuu team of the Big Music for Small Cities project recorded the entire workshop as a multi-camera production. The edited recording will be sent to the project partners, the Karelian State Philharmonic.
