Greetings from Ilomantsi!
Within the framework of the InterActive History project the Ilomantsi Museum Foundation have started collaborating with the local people who possess knowledge on the rune singing tradition of Ilomantsi. In mid-February, representatives of the Foundation met with folk musician Liisa Matveinen, who helped to understand better what rune singing is in practice. More progress has been made regarding workshops that will be arranged for local children and youth. The Ilomantsi Museum Foundation approached Lylykoski and Iknonvaara village schools on the subject and received agreement on cooperation this spring. The purpose of the workshops will be a deeper understanding of the local traditions of runic singing and the creation of digital content that can be used in teaching other students their cultural heritage.
