In December 2019, the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia has signed the Grant Contract for the new project with the Karelia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme (financed by the European Union, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Finland).

The two-year project KA9021 “Museums in focus: development of cultural services for Chinese tourists” starts in January 2020. Joensuu Museums is a partner to this project and represents Joensuu Museums, consisting of three museums: North Karelian Museum Hilma, Joensuu Art Museum and Bunker Museum. The main goal of the project is to create museum services and products for Chinese tourists at the regional level.

The project contributes with the training and educational activities to improving competences of cultural professionals in areas like working with Chinese tourists, navigation system for cultural institutions, hospitality, information promotion, Chinese social networks etc.

The second project work package is focused on creating cultural services and products that meet the requirements of Chinese tourists in the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia and Joensuu Museums. For instance, the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia is going to create a new navigation system, upgrade the audio guide service as well as design a new line of souvenir products and explore marketing opportunities. The most important project activity will be the creation of an exhibition based on the Karelian-Finnish Kalevala epic poem, which will become a new section of the Museum’s permanent exhibition.

In order to raise awareness about existing tourism services and products created within the project several promotional events are planned. New tourism services and products will be presented at leading specialized tourism exhibitions in Helsinki and Moscow. Also museum services and products created in Petrozavodsk will be promoted on the new Chinese branch of the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia’s web-page and popular Chinese social media. This communication strategy should increase visibility and provide more information about the museum services for Chinese clients.
