Design competition for the Olonets city

The landscape design competition for the Olonets city park is over. It was held in the framework of the InterActive History CBC Karelia project among environmental design students of the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design. Students were challenged to create design concepts that link the Olonets city park area and the exhibition of the Olonets national museum both visually and ideologically.

In their works students looked at the park not only as an attractive recreation site for locals and tourists but also as a place for integration of new museum services which are created through research and interpretation of local historic heritage. According to the competition rules the design solutions should refer to the former Olonets fortress that was once located in this park area.

During the preliminary stage of the competition the representatives of the Olonets region administration and the Olonets museum checked feasibility and costs of the design concepts. At the final stage the students’ works were evaluated by the jury consisting of staff of the Creative industries and cultural tourism development fund (the lead partner of the InterActive History project) and professional artists, designers and architects that teach at the Stieglitz Academy. The jury was chaired by People’s Artist of Russia, member of the Russian Academy of Art Alexei Talashchuk.

The jury stated the high level of all eight works presented by the students. Elena Khasanova, a third-year student, was announced the winner of the competion for her walking and biking trail in the Olonest city park. This project will be used as the basis for the Olonets city park improvement and will be partly implemented during the InterActive History project.
