Our project was launched on October 1, 2020. In the current situation a kick-off meeting was impossible but the procedure of signing the grant contract took place as a formal event.

GTRK Karelia aired a piece of news on this event, the video and translated transcript are below.

In the village of Kaalamo, Sortavala district, the water supply and sanitation system is being modernized. The large-scale project worth almost 3.5 million euros is the result of the work of the Russian, EU and Finnish CBC Programme "Karelia".
The signing ceremony of grant contract for the project formally marks the beginning of a new large-scale modernization of engineering infrastructure of the village of Kalamo.
The company Karelvodokanal - lead partner of the project, is already has shown his work and proved themselves. Currently the company is improving the water treatment system in the city of Sortavala. Similar works will be performed in Kaalamo.
According to the general director of the company, Andrey Romanchik, the project will significantly improve the quality of life of the local population, the environmental situation inside the settlement and for Lake Ladoga.
- As part of this project, we plan to build a new ground water intake, set up a five-kilometer two-line water supply line to the village, completely modernize the internal water supply system, that is, replace pipelines.
Such a serious modernization of the old engineering network has been expected since the Soviet times. Now the water intake comes from the Tohmajoki River. According to experts, it is expensive and inefficient to clean its muddy water. The new project is able to solve this problem.
- It is not only about clean water that is taken from the ground. A compact waste water treatment plant will be built, so the Tohmajoki River will be cleaner and, accordingly, Lake Ladoga.
The scale of the project is indicated by its cost - about 3.5 million euros. Works will begin at the beginning of next year, and it is planned to complete them at the end of 2022. And then apply the experience further, in other settlements of the Northern Ladoga region.
